The Park Avenue Malls Planting Project Tuplip

The Park Avenue Malls Planting Project is a continuation of the philanthropic efforts of Mrs. Albert D. Lasker. Today, with the support of the buildings facing the avenue and contributions from individuals, the malls between 54th and 86th streets are beautifully maintained throughout the year and feature seasonal highlights such as tulips, blooming Hawthorne and cherry trees and colorful begonias.

Holiday Memorial Tree Lighting Holiday Memorial Tree Lighting

Each winter the trees on the Park Avenue malls are lit to honor the memory of those who died in our nation’s wars. The tradition began in 1945 when Mrs. Stephen C. Clark lit the first trees as a memorial to the men and women who died in World War II. The lighting of the trees continues today because of the contributions The Fund receives from many generous donors. Each year the trees are lit on the first Sunday in December following a dedication ceremony held outside the Brick Church on Park Avenue at 91st Street.

The Park Avenue Malls Planting Project, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, is a continuation of the philanthropic efforts of the late Mrs. Albert D. Lasker. In the late 1960s, it was her early and generous support of Park Avenue that convinced the city that trees and flowers could thrive on the malls despite the traffic and pollution.

Today, with the support of the buildings facing the avenue and contributions from the community, the malls between 54th and 86th streets are beautifully maintained throughout the year.
To commemorate this important anniversary, white tulips (Darwin Hybrid Ivory Floradale) will be blooming on the malls this spring -- symbolizing pearls, the traditional gift for a 30th anniversary.
